The My History Lives Here series continues with the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina — a museum built on one of the most historically significant sites in the transatlantic slave trade.
Opened in 2023, the museum sits at Gadsden’s Wharf, where an estimated 40 percent of enslaved Africans brought to North America first arrived. The institution is dedicated to honoring the resilience, culture, and global impact of African Americans and the broader African diaspora.
Through immersive exhibits and storytelling, the museum traces the journey from West Africa to the Americas, highlighting the strength, survival, and contributions of those who endured enslavement and shaped the nation that followed. It also emphasizes genealogy, inviting visitors to connect personally with their ancestry.
