My History Lives Here is a Black History Month initiative from the Black Information Network dedicated to spotlighting Black history museums across the United States — and the communities, stories, and legacies they preserve.

My History Lives Here: Buffalo Soldiers National Museum

In the My History Lives Here series, the Black Information Network continues its Black History Month spotlight with the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston, Texas — the nation’s largest museum dedicated to chronicling the experiences and contributions of African American troops across U.S. military history.

Founded in 2001 by Vietnam veteran and military historian Captain Paul J. Matthews, the museum exists to preserve, educate, and share the legacy of Buffalo Soldiers and the broader African American military experience from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Its collection spans thousands of artifacts — including uniforms, documents, photographs, medals, and memorabilia — that bring to life stories of service, sacrifice, and resilience.

Located in a historic armory building that was once home to the Houston Light Guard, the museum serves as a cultural and educational anchor in the heart of Houston’s Third Ward. Exhibitions and programming highlight both well-known and lesser-told chapters of Black military service, including roles in combat and peace, the struggle for integration, and the enduring impact of African Americans in the armed forces.

As many Black history museums face funding and visibility challenges, My History Lives Here aims to elevate institutions like the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum — spaces that not only preserve the historical record but also inspire future generations by celebrating courage, commitment, and the fight for dignity. Because Black history isn’t confined to the past. It lives here.
