A Black woman who goes by "prettyphilthy" on TikTok found herself in the middle of a full-blown confrontation at a Costco in East Los Angeles — all because she didn't know about the store's receipt check policy.
The May 14 video has since racked up tens of thousands of views, and it's not hard to see why.
According to prettyphilthy, she had just made her very first Costco purchase: bouquets of flowers for her grandmother's funeral centerpieces. As a brand-new member unfamiliar with the store's exit policy — which requires shoppers to show their receipt on the way out — she tossed hers and walked out the door.
That's when things escalated fast. A Costco employee stopped her and accused her of stealing. But the situation took an even uglier turn when a white woman nearby — a complete stranger with zero connection to the transaction — jumped in, loudly called her a thief, and started filming her.
That was the wrong move.
"Who the f**k is you, b***h? You don't f**king work here!" prettyphilthy fired back, drawing several employees into the fray. She then turned the camera right back around on the woman. "She can be just as viral," she warned.
When staff appeared to be detaining her for shoplifting, prettyphilthy broke it down clearly: "I just got the Costco membership. I got flowers. I threw the receipt away. Next thing I know, he's following behind me and bumping his body against me… screaming, we're going to get you arrested. And this lady is chasing me with her phone in my face, calling me a thief over something I paid for?"
Her next two words cut through the noise: "Run the tape."
Managers agreed to pull the security footage. And once prettyphilthy dropped the words "assault" and "cops," the tone shifted completely — staff opted to review the footage and follow up rather than hold her.
In a follow-up video, she confirmed the general manager acknowledged she was right, issued an apology, and refunded her membership fee. Viewers online pointed out that Costco could have simply scanned her membership card to verify the purchase — the retailer tracks all transactions through its member accounts.
However, according to Costco's customer service policy, in-store purchases can take up to 24 hours to appear in the system.
