President Donald Trump is reportedly looking to resettle Palestinians displaced from Gaza in Africa under his postwar plan.

American and Israeli officials told the Associated Press that both countries have approached authorities in Sudan, Somalia, and Somaliland to permanently relocate more than two million Gazans.

The proposal has sparked widespread backlash and concern over its legality and ethics. Critics believe the move amounts to forced displacement and could be considered a war crime under international law. Arab nations are instead advocating for a multibillion-dollar reconstruction plan to allow Palestinians to remain in Gaza.

"Palestinian people remain steadfast and committed to their land, refusing to abandon their homeland," Hamas said in a statement.

Sudanese officials have already rejected the U.S. proposal to displace Palestinians. Somalia, a country that has long supported Palestinian self-determination, is likely to also reject the move. Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia seeking international recognition, could be a likely destination for Palestinians, with diplomatic recognition serving as an incentive for cooperation, according to reports.

With the White House pushing forward with its post-war plan and Arab nations countering with its reconstruction initiative, the fate of displaced Palestinians remains unclear.
