Charlamagne Tha God Earns Honorary Degree From South Carolina State Univ.

Throughout his career, Lenard "Charlamagne The God" McKelvey has been called a hall of fame radio host, bestselling author and podcast host. This weekend, he managed to add the moniker of "Doctor" to his long list of titles. The Breakfast Club co-host received an honorary degree from South Carolina State University during the institution's spring graduation ceremony. Adding to the celebration, the bestselling author also delivered an address to this semester's graduating class.

"[I] couldn't ask for a greater Mother's Day Weekend," he wrote on Instagram.

“Giving the commencement speech at my mother's alma mater on Mothers Day Weekend while she’s alive to see it was surreal. Thank you, God for engineering my life and Thank you South Carolina State University for the opportunity. It was an honor and a privilege!"

Charlamagne Tha God is a native of Charleston, South Carolina who started his career as an intern at Z-93 Jamz. Despite moving up north to work in Philadelphia and New York, the radio host has continued to give back to his home state. Last year, he worked with Ignite Cities and Elevation Church to provide free wifi for Columbia, South Carolina residents as they worked and attended school virtually. He also worked with South Carolina State University to launch a $250,000 scholarship fund back in 2019. Not to mention, he hosts an annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive for those in and around his hometown of Monck's Corner, South Carolina.

Outside of his work philanthropic work, Charlamagne Tha God has recently launched his Black Effect Podcast Network with Stephen Jackson, Matt Barnes, Cari Champion, Tamika Mallory and several other prominent figures. The radio host hopes that this endeavor will provide more opportunities to amplify voices of color in the growing podcast industry.
