Detroit sculptor Artis Lane’s bust of Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks is now on display in President Joe Biden’s Oval Office.
The figure joins art pieces featuring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., activist Cesar Chavez, and former Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman.
Lane, who is Black Canadian, told Detroit 4 News, she was honored to have her work displayed in the President’s office.
“All my life I have worked on three levels of consciousness: portraits, social injustice and metaphysics,” Lane said, according to her website.
“In my work I strive to heal, uplift and inspire viewers and collectors to find perfection in their own being.”
The 94-year-old boasts an impressive resume, including depicting leaders like Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, and both President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama in her portrait work.
Lane's famous painting "The Beginning" depicts Rosa Parks seated on a bus, looking out the window.
She also created bronze sculptures for the Soul Train Awards and is the creative designer behind the original logo for the Dance Theatre of Harlem.
Her bronze bust of Sojourner Truth was displayed in Emancipation Hall in the US Capitol.
The new additions to President Biden’s office were unveiled on Wednesday (January 20) as he signed several executive orders right after he was sworn into office.
